Livin’ the University Dream

I think everyone has a bunch of stereotypes about what university life is like. You know, that you’re going to meet your BFF’s in Residence (you might!). Or that people walk around campus dressed up in polo shirts (the guys) and really cute sweaters and jeans (the girls) and casually strike up conversations in the library that lead to adorable first dates. Or that you’re going to have really absent-minded professors who get super absorbed in their subject while they’re teaching and forget about everything else.

As I’m sure you can guess, many of these stereotypes are unrealistic or flat out ridiculous, however, some are actually true! Tonight’s example: I am a stereotypical university student with no food options.

Although I think I’ve been doing okay all year feeding myself (I usually eat pretty healthy and I have even tried some adventurous recipes like Miso Soup and Salmon Spinach Cream Pasta) my fridge situation has degraded to an unfortunate level…

My Pathetic Food Options

Admittedly, it might not LOOK that bad. But that’s seriously ALL I have in my fridge (okay, there is some Black Bean Dip and Cheddar Cheese on the middle shelf). And I have to say, 4 month old pesto sauce, 3 month old apple sauce, 2 week old cilantro (it’s an herb), and a bag of bran just don’t yield many dinner options. (I did have some 2 day old pizza, but I have eaten it for 3 meals in the last 2 days and I’m getting a little sick of it.)

The really sad part: My fridge has been like this for TWO WEEKS. I have eaten toast for breakfast, gone out for lunch (usually Tim Horton’s or some kind of cafe soup & bagel option, because it’s more affordable), and tried to find some sort of free dinner (e.g. my friend’s house, a school event) EVERY DAY. Tonight, I did my best with what I had: I used my bread, cheddar cheese, and a can of tuna I had in the pantry to make a toasted sandwich, and had some apple sauce on the side.

It’s a bit embarrassing (and I am SERIOUSLY in need of some fruit & vegetable intake), but you know what?

I kind of feel like I am livin’ the university dream.
