My First Blog!

Hi Everyone!

My name is Alysha and I am the newest addition to the Brescia Blog! I am going into my fourth year at Brescia completing a double major in Psychology and Health Sciences.

To be honest, when the opportunity to write a blog first arose, I wasn’t sure whether it was something I would be able to do or not. I wondered what I would write about, and more importantly, would people read what I do write? The more I thought about it though, the more it seemed like a great opportunity to share my experiences. So far, my experience at Brescia has been very positive. I have met some fantastic friends, had some wonderful professors, and have always had a great experience with the staff members. I thought the blog would be a great way to share these positive experiences with the larger community.

This will be the first time I have written a blog. I can add it to my list of firsts I have experienced at Brescia. From attending O-Week, to being a Soph, to being on students’ council, to participating in photo shoots (now that is something that I never thought I would do!).

A lot of exciting things will be taking place in the next few weeks so I am excited to get back to school and begin blogging!

Back to School Shopping: the ultimate stress reliever

Over the past two weeks since my last blog post, my mantra has changed from “September, hurry up” to “slow down summer”.

I have never felt so overwhelmed in my life…there is TOO much to do, too many people to see, too many cute things to buy for my dorm room and too much work to be done in such a short time frame. I cannot believe I am moving out in less than 2 weeks! AH!

Before this weekend, I felt extremely stressed about all that needed to be done before I left for London. Three days of power shopping later, I feel once again excited (and not stressed) about the prospect of going away to school.

All it took was making a list; a three page monstrous list formed by suggestions from my mom, older friends and lists on the internet to get me on the road to back to school shopping.

With most of the items on my list bought, I feel a sense of relief that I can see, do and pack (almost) everything in  the 12 days that remain before I move into Brescia!

Needless to say, with an ever dwindling to-do list, and my last week of work upon me, I have never been so excited for summer to end and a new chapter in my life to begin.

Now if I could only attempt to pack up all those purchases…

Let the Countdown begin!

One month remains….dum dum dum…..

Usually the month of August brings a time to reflect on the summer thus far and the fact that yes, the summer is in fact half-over.

But not this year. Like many other Brescia frosh, I could not be more excited for school to start (and by school I mean the fun part like moving into my residence room and meeting new people). So as I continue to shop for bedding, towels and other dorm “essentials” , I will use this time to reflect on how I got to this point- one month away from moving into the Brescia castle.

For the past year, I researched various universities and programs to find my right university “fit”. I always liked Brescia, but the all-women’s concept freaked me out! Luckily, I came across Kate’s blog and realized that 1. Brescia is awesome! and 2. Girls who choose to go to all-women’s institutions are not only normal but super cool. So in a full circle moment, I wish to say goodbye to Kate, the resident blogger of Bresciablog and the person who helped make my decision to come to Brescia easier! Not only is Kate super nice, but she’s really smart (hello, grad school!) and her blogs are always informative. I wish Kate all the best on her trip to Europe and her new beginnings in September on behalf of the Bresciablog community. I know everyone , including myself, will miss reading her posts!

So here’s to new beginnings, mid-summer reflections and ONE MONTH TO GO!

Cheers,

Christine xo

So long, farewell!

Well, folks, this is it: the end of my time as your resident Brescia Blogger! I’m sad to go, but excited to move on.

I’m especially excited to leave this blog in the capable hands of Christine! I can’t wait read her observations of life at Brescia and follow her on her journey from acceptance until  graduation (well, if she doesn’t pass on the blogging torch before then)!

If you read my blog entries, you will get a glimpse into just how much of an impact Brescia has had on my life. I feel really lucky to have had this opportunity to share it with you! Brescia is a wonderful school and community, as I’m sure you know if you are already there. If you’re not there yet, I hope this blog has given you some inspiration to consider coming!

I’d like to leave you with a quote that our VP Finance, Brien, read at our last Student Council meeting a year ago:

“What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make and end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.” T.S. Elliot

I wish you the best in all your endings and your new beginnings!

TSUT #3 – Use the Super Sweet Services

There are LOTS of amazing services on campus that you may not know about. Find them now, and your years at Brescia will be a lot smoother!

Here are a few of my favourite finds:

HBK Shuttle Bus- The HBK bus is a service provided free to Brescia, Huron, and Kings students that shuttles you between campuses. It’s timed to classes, so you don’t have to walk all the way from one class to the next! All you do is hop on and hop off (no need for a bus pass).

Student Health- Did you know that as part of your student fees you pay for the Student Health Plan? This plan covers your 80% of drug prescriptions (as well as other benefits)  just as a normal medical plan would. On campus is also a fully-functioning walk-in/health clinic called  Student Health Services (it’s run FOR students, not BY students). Just show up with your health card and student card and you can get the care you need (you can usually call ahead to book a same day appointment). I’ve had great experiences with the staff and medical professionals at Student Health, and they have lots of experience dealing with typical student-related concerns(like stress or sexual health).

Off Campus Housing Service- Did you know that Western has a service for students living in Off Campus Housing? Check out their website to read campus house listings, learn about meal plans for non-residence students, find out more about renting in London, and link to Housing Mediation, which is a free service that helps you resolve conflicts with Landlords or roommates, etc.

Western’s Student Success Center - Check out the Western Student Services website, especially the CAREERS section! This center has tons of things you need to help you out through your time at Western, whether you want to jump-start your career or look for a leadership opportunity. The cool thing about Career Central is that it lets you browse job postings and sign up for internship positions!

Brescia’s Student Services - At Brescia, the Student Services are tailored to YOU! They have tons of great personal development programs and their own career services!

Writing Skills Instructor- There is a support person at Brescia specifically hired to help you with your writing. “Bring your notes, doodles, and assignments” and book a one-on-one appointment. Also check out the workshops offered through the University Student Toolkit, another great resource.

Well, that’s it! Just SOME of the awesome resources available to you on campus. Hopefully Christine will share more of her finds with you- and you will post any great ones on here!

Good luck!
