On Tuesday, I participated in the United Way Chair Derby. Students’ council entered a team and I got to ride in the chair! We found some crazy clothing from our students’ council costume box and called ourselves the “Buzz Team”. There were 6 teams in total with participants from the Registrar’s Office, the Foundation, Professors, other students, and Student Services.
My team went first and we completed the track in 19 seconds! We thought that was pretty good, it felt like we were going pretty fast! We thought that we might have been at a bit of a disadvantage because our chair was slightly broken – it was missing an arm. I don’t think this turned out to be a problem because I didn’t fall off of the chair!

Our 19 seconds was blown away by the Preliminary Students “Preliminary Launch” team – they finished in 11 seconds! They flew around those pylons!
It was definitely a fun event! When students’ council goes to buy a new chair, they will have to think about a strategy for next year’s chair derby. A light, aerodynamic chair that is easy to push would be perfect!
